10th Annual PHWC Bowl-A-Thon Set for Saturday, May 7

In one of the sure signs of Spring in central Vermont, the annual People’s Health & Wellness Clinic Bowl-A-Thon is set for Saturday, May 7, 1:00 – 3:00 PM at Twin City Family Fun Center.  This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the event, and some special activities are planned to make this year’s bigger and better than ever. Form a team and register now!  It’s time to put your teams together, have some fun, and help out a good cause at the same time. Lanes will go fast, so don’t delay in registering your team. All ages and skills are welcome! Call the Clinic at 479-1229, or download the registration form on the Clinic website: www.phwcvt.org. Teams ideally consist of five bowlers, and are asked to raise a minimum of $50 each for a team total of $250.  But don’t stop there.  People who raise more than $100 or more will be entered into a drawing to win extra prizes, such as dinners for two at local restaurants or other valuable merchandise or services.  Top prizes are given to the top individual and team fundraisers – including an overnight for two at The Pitcher Inn, in Warren. “The Bowl-A-Thon is our major annual fundraising event,” said Clinic Executive Director Peter Youngbaer, “and it’s grown every year.”  “It’s a great opportunity for people to go out, promote community awareness, and raise money to help provide needed health care to those who can’t afford it,” he added. Thanks to the National Life Group Foundation, all participants bowl for free, including balls and shoes. Twin City Family Fun Centers new snack bar... read more

People’s Health & Wellness Clinic Names Morrisville Native as Nurse Case Manager

The People’s Health & Wellness Clinic, located in Barre, announces the appointment of Nicole Valcour, RN, of Morrisville, as its new Nurse Case Manager. PHWC Executive Director Peter Youngbaer said, “We couldn’t be more pleased to have Nicole join our staff. She has a career of working with disadvantaged populations, which will be a great asset for our clinic.” Valcour will be responsible for coordinating all patient care at the Clinic, and interfacing with the corps of over seventy volunteers, including doctors, nurses, and other health practitioners who serve the clinic and its patients. Youngbaer added, “Nicole brings specific knowledge of Vermont’s Ladies First program, which is an added bonus.  She’ll be working on outreach to the many women who are eligible for this program, but may be unaware of it.  They may have insurance, but Ladies First provides additional assistance for breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings, and a new special emphasis on cardio-vascular health, including memberships in fitness programs.” Valcour comes to PHWC most immediately from the Community Health Center, in Burlington, but has spent the last ten years working with the Clint Spencer Clinic, in Hawaii.  A Vermont native, she received her nursing degree and a BA in anthropology from the University of Vermont, and a MA and MPH from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The mission of the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic is to provide primary health care and wellness education to the uninsured and underinsured community members of Central Vermont who cannot otherwise afford these services.  In addition to primary medical care, PHWC offers mental health, oral health, body work, diet and... read more

PHWC To Expand Oral Health Services Availability

The People’s Health & Wellness Clinic of Barre is expanding the availability of free oral health check-ups for low-income residents of central Vermont, thanks to a major gift from the Central Vermont Medical Center, a member of The University of Vermont Health Network. Since last November, the free clinic has offered dental hygiene services to its patients one day a week. A $10,000 donation from the hospital will enable the clinic’s dental hygienist to work additional hours and see patients on a second weekday. “There is a large need for better access to dental care services in Vermont. More than 30 percent of uninsured adult Vermonters have gone without needed dental care because they could not afford it, according to the recent state health insurance survey,” said Peter Youngbaer, executive director of the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic. “This generous gift from the Central Vermont Medical Center is a huge boost in helping us fill this gap.” “It’s important for everyone to be able to access dental care, as oral health has a significant impact on a person’s overall well-being,” said Judy Tartaglia, president and CEO of Central Vermont Medical Center. “The program model that the People’s Health & Wellness Clinic uses has worked very well during the last four months and we’re very pleased to support its expansion.” One of the clinic’s medical exam rooms has been converted to a dental care space. Dental hygienist and Oral Health Case Manager Samantha Petrone, who is employed by the clinic, provides cleanings, periodontal charting of the status of teeth and gums, and oral health education. She works under a supervisory... read more
