Position Title: Medical Director (Volunteer, Part-Time)

About PHWC

The People’s Health & Wellness Clinic (PHWC) in Barre, Vermont, provides free primary medical, dental, mental health, and wellness services to uninsured and underinsured adults in Central Vermont. We are a community-based, nonprofit clinic committed to removing barriers to care and addressing the social determinants of health.

Position Summary

The Medical Director is a volunteer clinical leader who provides oversight, guidance, and support for PHWC’s medical services. Working in collaboration with the Executive Director, Director of Clinical Services, volunteer providers, and the Board of Directors, the Medical Director ensures that PHWC delivers high-quality, patient-centered, and safe care. This is a part-time role requiring a flexible time commitment of approximately 6–10 hours per month.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical leadership and clinical oversight for PHWC’s volunteer providers and staff.

  • Ensure compliance with clinical policies, protocols, and quality assurance standards.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Clinical Services on clinical program development, patient safety, and risk management.

  • Serve as a resource and mentor for volunteer clinicians and support staff.

  • Assist in provider recruitment and retention, including outreach to local physicians, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals.

  • Participate in periodic meetings of the Board of Directors and the Clinic’s Health & Wellness Committee.

  • Represent PHWC in the community and with partner organizations as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Licensed physician (MD or DO) or NP in good standing in the State of Vermont.

  • Experience in primary care, family medicine, or internal medicine preferred.

  • Commitment to PHWC’s mission of providing free, high-quality health care to underserved populations.

  • Must have demonstrated a track record of leading and managing in a complex and limited resource environment.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.

  • Willingness to work in a volunteer-driven, resource-limited environment.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 6–10 hours per month, flexible schedule.

  • Combination of on-site, remote, and meeting participation.

Compensation

  • This is a volunteer position.

Beloved Bob Dylan Contest Returns, Raises Nearly $2,500 for People’s Health & Wellness Clinic

Berlin, VT – A cherished Vermont tradition made a triumphant return on April 12 as the Great

Green Mountain Bob Dylan Wannabe Contest once again brought music, community, and

purpose to the Capital City Grange—raising nearly $2,500 to support the People’s Health &

Wellness Clinic (PHWC) in Barre.

After a multi-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this long-running event was joyfully

revived with a crowd of over 150 attendees and 12 talented performers delivering heartfelt Bob

Dylan covers.

“As the man himself once said, ‘I’ll let you be in my dream if I can be in yours,’” said Daniel

Barlow, PHWC executive director. “Thanks to this support, everyone who participated is now

part of our dream—a dream of a community where no one is denied healthcare because they

People’s Clinic and Gifford Health Care Partner to Offer Low-Barrier Substance Use Treatment in Barre

Barre, VT – The People’s Health & Wellness Clinic (PHWC) is proud to announce a new partnership with Gifford Health Care’s Addiction Medicine Program to provide low-barrier substance use treatment services at PHWC’s Barre clinic.

This initiative will bring expert addiction care directly to the community, ensuring that individuals seeking treatment have easy and immediate access to the support they need.

Beginning March 5, substance use treatment services are available at PHWC every Wednesday from 9 AM-Noon. Roz Vara-Good, FNP-C, an experienced provider from Gifford’s Addiction Medicine Program, will work out of PHWC’s offices to offer same-day appointments and accept walk-ins for those seeking assistance.
